Meet Jason, our awesome sports therapist who joined team tayloredfit in September 2020. What a time to start a new job, thrown into uncertain times under cover of PPE!
He quickly became one of our tayloredfit family and clients speak really highly of him – these blogs enable us to dig a bit deeper and help you find out a little more about the man under all that PPE! Thanks Jason – we hope you enjoy getting to know Jason a bit more and learn about his background.
Tell us a bit about yourself and the name or nature of your business
Hi, my name is Jason Stobbs and I am a Sports Therapist at Tayloredfit Physio. In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit and have a particular interest in running. Since the age of 12, I have been a club athlete originally with Gateshead Harriers and Athletics Club and more recently Washington Running Club. Taking part in sport myself, I fully understand the importance of integrating sports massage into training.
When I graduated in 2008 with a BSc Hons in Sports Therapy. I took the decision to set up my own company for Sports Therapy- Sports Therapy North East. I have a passion for sport and exercise and a keen interest in supporting others to achieve their goals. My main focus is to provide care that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of patients back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness.
Since qualifying I have gained experience with a wide range of individuals from amateur to elite level. I have worked as a Sports Massage Therapist in both the London 2012 Olympic Games and the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships. This has enabled me to work with a variety of athletes across many sports and disciplines.
I have experience of treating both children and adults from multiple sports. Having worked within Boxing, MMA, Athletics and Gymnastics clubs. I have developed my skills and become a versatile therapist with the ability to adapt my treatment to meet the individual patients needs.
Tell us more about your work
In 2012 I worked at the London Olympic Games as a Sports Massage Practitioner. This was in the Polyclinic, based in the Olympic Village. This enabled me with the opportunity to work with a vast range of elite athletes over many events. I was able to work within a multidisciplinary team, sharing practice with professionals such as Physiotherapists, Doctors, Chiropractors and Osteopaths. This work allowed me to develop my own practice and build upon my skills. This was an amazing experience and has been the highlight of my working career so far.
In 2017, I once again worked alongside a lot of these practitioners at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London. For this role, I was based within the team hotels and at the London Olympic Stadium. Again, this was a great experience and another chance to work with world-class, athletes.
In 2013 I volunteered for Run Geordie Run as a support team member to Mark Allison who ran 2383 miles from the west coast to the east coast of Australia. I provided medical assistance for Mark for the three weeks I was with him, including first aid treatment to injuries, exercises for rehabilitation and soft tissue work to muscles. In June 2016, I joined the Run Geordie Run team once again to support with his run across Europe.
Having worked for Run Geordie Run, I have developed a strong interest In the Children’s Foundation, one of the charities that benefit from Marks fundraising. In September 2014, I worked for the Charity at the Great North Run. This involved providing Sports Massage to runners for the Charity in the tent after the run. I have previously done this for the Percy Hedley Foundation for a number of years. I have since been involved in a number of fundraising events for the Children’s Foundation.
Who would benefit from coming to see you
Everyone! Joking aside, there is not many people would not benefit from coming to see me. Regardless of whether or not you are a sports person/ injured, Sports Massage can benefit everyone.
I work on general tightness, which could be due to occupational reasons or posture. Clients can receive sports massage to help them recover from injuries or intensive training, reduce pain and to prevent future damage. Sports massage can help even if you do not exercise regularly.
What are the best bits about what you do
I absolutely love that every day is different in my work. I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people, helping them on the road to their success. I also really enjoy seeing my regular clients, some of which I have now worked with for over 12 years.
What are the biggest challenges about what you do
With everyday being different, I am faced with a wide range of client requirements. Although it is challenging, I love to think on my feet. I recognise that I am a life-long learner and regularly attend professional development events to ensure my knowledge is kept up to date with current research.
Having been self employed for the last 12 years, has meant that I have needed to network and communicate with a wide range of practitioners which I find makes my job really interesting.
One of the biggest challenges more recently, which has been the same for a lot of businesses is Covid 19. I returned to work in July 2020 following a spell of not being able to which lasted 16 weeks in total. It was quite short notice when I got the green light to start again which meant having to review all the guidance and make sure I had in place all PPE requirements and carried out extra screening of clients. It was quite daunting to start with but then became “The new normal.” It has shown just how important being able to adapt and adapt quickly is doing what I do. It is encouraging to keep seeing clients during these times and gain feedback of how safe they feel with everything in place.
Why did you choose to collaborate with Tayloredfit?
I thrive on working within a multi-practitioner setting and sharing good practise with other professionals. When the opportunity to work at Tayloredfit presented itself, I felt it was the perfect opportunity.
A year previous to the job opportunity, I attended a NCT Antenatal class at Tayloredfit in the Bamboo Studio and I remember saying that this looked like an amazing place to work. I could not believe it when I saw they were looking for a Sports Therapist.
Being at Tayloredfit, is a great clinic environment with a multitude of professionals. I thoroughly enjoy being part of the team and love that the staff and the clients form a strong community. The rapport between the clients and the staff is fantastic and I feel like Tayloredfit is aligned with my ethos.
I went into this line of work to help people and I feel that Tayloredfit is all about this.
What are your business goals in the next 5 years?
As I have previously said, I believe that I am a lifelong learner and will continue to develop my practice over my career.
In the next 5 years, I aim to work with Tayloredfit to continue to develop, support and enhance Sports Therapy at the clinic.
I have a real interest in teaching other people my profession and passing on my skills to others. I would love to have the opportunity to deliver training courses in Sports Therapy in the future.
Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?
I don’t think our honeymoon destinations will be topped. Sightseeing in New York followed by ultimate relaxation in Barbados.
Who makes you laugh?
My little girl makes me laugh every single day. She is absolutely hilarious (but I am biased) In fact she could become a comedian in the future. There’s nothing better than her infectious laugh to make you feel good.
What is your top tip to staying healthy in mind and body?
Everything in moderation. That’s my motto! You have to give yourself little treats to reward yourself when reaching goals.
Tell us a random, interesting or funny story about you!
I once appeared on the hit children’s TV show Fun House in the 90’s! No I did not win! Yes, I did spit my dummy out!
