Learning to Trust My Body Again: A Patient Story

Rebuilding My Life After a Life-Changing Car Accident

A patient story shared with permission.

On a slightly overcast Tuesday morning in November 2021, I set off for work as normal. I was looking forward to the day ahead and had plans that evening. Within moments, everything changed.

A serious car accident turned my life upside down.

Despite somehow walking away from the wreckage, the reality of what had happened soon became clear. My life quickly became a series of hospital appointments, medical assessments and specialist consultations.

Several diagnoses followed, including:

  • Brain injury
  • Post-concussion syndrome
  • Neurological fatigue
  • Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
  • Vestibular dysfunction
  • PTSD
  • Whiplash
  • Torn muscles and soft tissue injuries

Like many people navigating complex injuries, I found myself surrounded by experts but often receiving conflicting advice. The more opinions I heard, the less confident I became in my own judgement.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

As I explored treatment options, I made an appointment at Tayloredfit Physio.

I expected a fairly standard treatment plan, but what I experienced was very different.

I began CranioSacral Therapy. Although I had heard of it before, I knew very little about it. What stood out immediately was that the focus wasn’t simply on my injuries. It was on me as a whole person.

My recovery wasn’t just physical.

My anxious mind, overwhelmed nervous system and sense of safety all needed support too.

The questions I was asked felt different. Every appointment felt tailored to where I was at that particular moment in my recovery.

Some weeks that meant learning Pilates-based exercises and movement strategies. Other weeks it meant reassurance and validation that what I was experiencing was real, even when the latest MRI scan or X-ray didn’t provide clear answers.

I never felt like I was being placed into a standard treatment pathway.

Finding Hope Again

There may never be a moment when I feel completely “recovered.”

Some symptoms are likely to remain part of my life.

However, my life today is very different from the life I was living when I first walked through the doors at Tayloredfit Physio.

In those early appointments, even looking up at a picture on the wall could trigger pain. I experienced dizziness, instability and overwhelming fatigue. Most of my days were spent sleeping and my regular outings were limited to treatment appointments.

Perhaps most significantly, I struggled to feel hopeful about my future.

Recovery felt uncertain and overwhelming.

Learning to Trust My Body Again

One of the most important things I gained during treatment wasn’t just symptom improvement.

I learned how to trust my body again.

Through the support of Mark, Vicky and the wider team, I began to understand that I was the expert on my own body. I learned to listen to what it needed rather than constantly searching for external answers.

That lesson has stayed with me throughout my recovery journey.

The road hasn’t been easy. In many ways it has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life.

But I prefer to think of it as character-building.

Building a New Future

Today I am rebuilding my life.

That includes starting a business, spending time with friends, planning days out and having things to look forward to again.

The moments that matter most, however, are often the simplest ones.

Being able to wake up with manageable pain levels.

Taking my dog for a walk.

Having the balance, strength and coordination to enjoy everyday life.

These are things I no longer take for granted.

A Place That Still Feels Like Home

I continue to attend Tayloredfit Physio for CranioSacral Therapy, Pilates and Sound Baths whenever I can.

Even now, my nervous system seems to breathe a sigh of relief when I walk through the doors.

I am incredibly grateful for the support I have received from Mark, Vicky and the whole team.

Their kindness, compassion, professionalism and expertise have played a significant role in helping me reach this point.

I often think about how different my life might have been had I not followed my instincts and sought treatment here.

For that, I will always be thankful.
